Follow The Watcher
The story follows the alien Uatu, a narrator of the episodes and tales. He is part of the Watchers, a race of extraterrestrials, commonly depicted as all-powerful beings that ‘watch’ over the multiverse and the stories that take place. Although they aren’t allowed to interact with other characters, they all have done so on many occasions throughout the comic book series and television series. They are the oldest species in the multiverse and are committed to observing the characters to compile knowledge.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the first Watcher to appear in the comics —named Uatu— made his debut in Fantastic Four #13 (1963).
The first volume of the comic book series was released in 1977, following the story of “What If Spider-Man had joined the Fantastic Four?”. We are presented an alternate version of the events in the original The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (released in 1963).
Since the initial debut, we have seen a variety of comic books published under the title name, such as What If “Gwen Stacy had lived?”, “Iron Man Had Become A Traitor?”, “The War Machine Had Not Destroyed The Living Laser?”, “Jessica Jones Had Joined The Avengers?”, “Wolverine Had Killed The Hulk?”, “Rick Jones Became The Hulk?”, and “Captain America Hadn’t Vanished During World War Two?” — to name a few. Many of these releases have become very popular and highly regarded among Marvel fans.
Disney+
In 2021 on the Disney+ streaming service, Marvel’s What If...? Was released. Throughout the course of nine episodes in season one, the Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) introduces audiences to universes where a slight deviation from the path altered the outcome of events. The audience is shown worlds where Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) took the Super-Soldier Serum and became Captain Britain, Prince T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) was abducted by the Ravagers and took on the role of Star-Lord, and the superheroes have become zombies.
