Origins Of The Character
Created by artist Jack Kirby and writer Stan Lee, the superhero is based on the Norse Asgardian God of Thunder. When wielding the mythological weapon Mjolnir, he can harness the power of the mighty hammer to help him fly and manipulate the weather.
Only worthy individuals can wield the hammer and use its power, with the likes of Jane Foster, Odin, Beta Ray Bill, Captain America, Eric Masterson, Loki, Black Panther, Bor, The Destroyer, Squirrel Girl, Buri, and Eddie Brock, who all were able to wield the magical hammer at some point.
As a result of his alien and godly heritage, he possesses unique powers: strength, endurance, agility, and speed — among others.
The MCU’s God Of Thunder
In 2011, we finally got to see the character (played by actor Chris Hemsworth) introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in his own eponymous feature film. This was the fourth film in Phase 1 and the character’s second live-action portrayal, following in the footsteps of The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988), featuring Eric Allan Kramer as Thor.
In the film, the God Of Thunder is banished from the fantastical realm of Asgard by his father Odin (Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins) after he reignited an age-old feud between Asgard and Jotunheim. Stripped of his powers and sent to Earth, he is found by Dr. Jane Foster, her assistant Darcy Lewis, and mentor Dr. Erik Selvig.
The Dark Worlds is the sequel to Thor and was released in 2013. Revolving around the return of an ancient enemy: Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his army of Dark Elves. Malekith, awakened by the release of the Aether, seeks to get hold of this weapon and release it on the Nine Realms. In 2017, Marvel released the 17th film of the MCU with Ragnarok. The mighty God is trapped on the planet Sakaar, where he’s forced to fight the planet’s reigning champion, the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). He must escape Sakaar in time to save Asgard from his sister Hela (Cate Blanchett).
Love and Thunder, released in 2022, follows the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019) and is the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The eponymous character has to recruit Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), in an attempt to stop Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) from eliminating all gods.
In addition to the character’s solo films, he has also appeared in various other movies based in the MCU. Some of his notable appearances include Avengers Assemble (2012), Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015), Doctor Strange (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
