Beginning Of The Saga
Created by visionary director George Lucas, the franchise first hit the scene in 1977 with Episode IV – A New Hope. It quickly became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon, reinvigorating the genre with its sci-fi world and unique concept.
Crafted by the brilliant mind of George Lucas, A New Hope was only just the beginning of an expansive storyline known as the Skywalker Saga. The story follows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who originally lives a simple life as a farmer living on Tatooine with his uncle and aunty. His life quickly turned upside down when his aunt and uncle are brutally murdered by the Galactic Empire. ‘Old Ben’ Kenobi (Alex Guinness) decides to help Luke and teach him the way of the Force. Eventually, Luke becomes a pivotal figure in the Rebel Alliance’s fight against the Galactic Empire.
The film was subsequently followed up by Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi (1983), concluding the original trilogy.
We have seen the galactic storyline expand further through the release of the epic prequels, sequels, television series, and video games. These include the likes of Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack Of The Clones (2002), Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith (2005), Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017), Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019), Rogue One (2016), Solo (2018), The Clone Wars (aired in 2008), The Mandalorian (aired in 2019), The Book Of Boba Fett (aired in 2021), Visions (aired in 2021), The Bad Batch (aired in 2021), and Kenobi (aired in 2022) — among others.
Star Wars Legends
Legends (formally known as the Expanded Universe) is derived from novels, comic books, video games, spin-off films, television series, and toys. The Expanded Universe began with the novel Splinter Of The Mind’s Eye (1978), written by Alan Dean Foster.
In 2014, Lucasfilm announced that EU will be under the new non-canon “Legends” banner, making way for a new line of continuity (e.g Sequels).
