Hunt The Jedi

Since the release of the original trilogy, Darth Vader has become one of the most iconic and popular villains in pop culture. He first appeared on cinema screens in 1977, presented as the main antagonist in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Portrayed by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones, the feared Sith Lord made an enormous impression on audiences worldwide with his distinctive black armor and terrifying power.

He was the primary antagonist across the original trilogy: Episode IV A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), And Return Of The Jedi (1983). To draw the trilogy to a close, he ultimately redeems himself by saving his son Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and 'killing' Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), sacrificing his own life in the process.

Before he became a disciple of the dark side, he was in fact Anakin Skywalker, a goodhearted Jedi Knight and hero of the Clone Wars. Fighting alongside Obi-Wan KenobiAhsoka Tano, Yoda, Kit Fisto, Plo Koon, Luminara Unduli, Adi Gallia, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Aayla Secura, and Quinlan Vos, he became tired of the Jedi Council when he had to hide his love for Padme. Any form of attachment was forbidden as per the Jedi Order rules. The death of Anakin's mother was a turning point for the Jedi, blaming the Jedi Masters for ignoring his dreams and fears of losing his mother. Originally a slave on Tatooine, he was lured to the dark side of the Force by Palpatine and eventually assumed the role of Lord Vader after the historical events at Mustafar.

The origins of the character were further explored in the prequel trilogy, beginning with Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). We witnessed a young Anakin Skywalker (portrayed by Jake Lloyd) learn he has the Force.

In Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002), (taking place 10 years after The Phantom Menace), a 19-year-old Anakin appears as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s (Ewan McGregor) Padawan apprentice.

In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith, we get to see his near-fatal duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar in 19 BBY. This led to Emperor Palpatine constructing the infamous mobile life support system encased in a suit. This was designed to maintain and protect the young Sith apprentice's charred body. The gap between the two trilogies was explored in the Disney+ television series Kenobi (2021), set years after the events of Revenge Of The Sith.

We have seen countless comic book and novel series originating from the release of A New Hope in 1977. Many publishers and writers have explored the character's tragic story in a variety of series, shedding light on new aspects of the Sith Lord. Known for his work on Daredevil, She-Hulk, and Wolverine, Charles Soule took over writing duties for Marvel's Star Wars: Darth Vader series in 2017 with artist Giuseppe Camuncoli. The first issue gives fans a recount of Anakin Skywalker's final moments and Darth Vader's first breath.
