The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in North America, which began in 1917. Following the suspension of the National Hockey Association (NHA), the organization immediately took the place as one of the more popular ice hockey leagues.
At its establishment, the NHL started with four teams who were all from Canada. It wasn’t until 1924 that the league expanded to the United States.
Since its beginning, the league has grown exponentially in North America, comprising of 32 teams.
